What have you read lately?

Read, read, read. Read everything—trash, classics, good and bad, and see how they do it. Just like a carpenter who works as an apprentice and studies the most. Read! You'll absorb it. Then write. If it is good, you'll find out. If it's not, throw it out the window. ~ William Faulkner

I'm currently re-reading Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott. I went to a great workshop sponsored by Mad About Words and was reminded of Bird by Bird. If you haven't read it, it's a great book on writing and life.

So, what have you read lately that has helped you in your art or writing?

I avoid bad books… once I feel they are bad I put them down immediately. I know the advice is you can learn more from bad than you can good ones, but I am afraid… yes, I am afraid! I am worried some of that bad writing or bad techniques, will attach themselves to my brain and I’ll be forever curse to repeat their mistakes.

So I read good books, well at least books I consider “good”.

The last books I have read were: Brandon Sanderson’s Mist Born trilogy. And I must say I loved them, especially the ending.

Now I am reading: Cassandra Clare’s, City of Bones: her first book in The Mortal Instruments trilogy, so far so good.
